If you have been following detergent regulations in Europe, you already know the drill. EDTA works, but it sticks around in the environment. Phosphonates are under fire. And NTA? That one comes with a carcinogenicity warning.
Formulators are caught between performance and compliance.
MGDA-Na₃ (methylglycine diacetic acid) has quietly become the go-to replacement. It chelates hard water ions, boosts cleaning power, and breaks down completely after use. No compromises. No regulatory headaches.
At its core, MGDA is an amino-acid-based chelator built on an alanine backbone. That matters because alanine is natural—found in proteins. The chemistry mimics what nature already makes.
Basic specs:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| CAS No. | 164462-16-2 |
| Forms | Liquid (40–55%), powder (≥85%), granule (≥78%) |
| pH (1% solution) | 10.0–12.0 |
| Biodegradability | Ready (OECD 301) |
The trisodium salt form is the most common for industrial and homecare applications.
It degrades fast. Under OECD 301 tests, MGDA breaks down more than 60% within 28 days—often over 80% in just two weeks. EDTA shows almost no degradation over the same period. For EU Ecolabel and Nordic Swan, that difference is everything.
It works across pH 2 to 14. One chelator handles acidic descalers, neutral all-purpose cleaners, and alkaline laundry liquids. You do not need different products for different jobs.
It handles high temperatures. Automatic dishwashers run hot. Industrial cleaning can exceed 90°C. MGDA stays effective.
It is safe. No hazardous labelling under EU CLP. Non-irritating to skin and eyes. Low aquatic toxicity.
Automatic dishwashing is probably the biggest market in Europe. Since phosphates were banned, MGDA has filled the gap. It prevents filming on glassware and removes starch and protein soils better than citrates alone.
Laundry detergents benefit too. MGDA stops soap scum from forming on fabrics. It also helps remove blood, milk, and other protein-based stains by binding the calcium that stabilises those soils.
Industrial cleaning is a growing segment. Breweries use it for beerstone removal. Dairies use it for milk scale. Cooling towers use it as a phosphorus-free scale inhibitor.
Oil and gas applications are more niche but proven. Recent research in ACS Omega (2025) showed MGDA outperforming GLDA, DTPA, and HEDP for calcium sulphate scale removal.
Here is something many buyers miss.
NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) is chemically similar to MGDA. It chelates well. But under EU CLP, NTA is classified as a suspected carcinogen (H351) . That means "R40" labelling—limited evidence of cancer risk.
Some MGDA production processes leave trace amounts of NTA as an impurity. For most industrial uses, trace levels may be acceptable. But if you are targeting:
EU Ecolabel
Nordic Swan
Blue Angel
Retailer standards (Lidl, Carrefour, Aldi)
...even trace NTA can block your application.
Yuanlian Chemical produces MGDA-Na₃ with non-detectable levels of NTA. Their manufacturing process is designed to eliminate this impurity entirely.
For formulators, that means:
No surprise audit failures
No last-minute reformulation
Full access to eco-label markets
| Property | MGDA (Yuanlian) | EDTA | NTA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Readily biodegradable | ✅ Yes | ❌ No | ⚠️ Partial |
| EU Ecolabel eligible | ✅ Yes | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| NTA-free | ✅ Yes | N/A | N/A |

Typical use levels:
Laundry liquids: 1–5% MGDA by weight
ADW powders/tabs: 2–8%
Industrial descalers: 5–16%
Compatibility: MGDA works with anionic and non-ionic surfactants, enzymes, preservatives, and bleaches. No special handling required.
Forms: Use liquid for easy blending into aqueous formulas. Use powder or granule for dry mixes or tablets.
If you are buying MGDA from outside the EU—China, for example—always confirm REACH compliance. Your importer or distributor must handle registration.
Yuanlian Chemical is a Chinese manufacturer specialising in biodegradable chelates (MGDA, GLDA, IDS, PASP). European buyers have taken notice for three reasons:
NTA-free as standard – no hidden impurities
Full documentation – OECD biodegradability, REACH, CoA
Competitive pricing – direct from the producer
They offer liquid, powder, and granular forms. Technical support for formulation work is available.
MGDA-Na₃ is not a science project anymore. It is a proven, commercial chelating agent used across European detergents and industrial cleaners.
It outperforms EDTA in biodegradability, matches it in chelating power, and carries no regulatory baggage.
And if NTA content worries you, Yuanlian Chemical's MGDA removes that concern completely.
